Gustav Mahler
“I walked across the field this morning”: dew on the grass, a finch and the bluebells wish the wanderer good morning, and the whole world sparkles. Then, very quietly, he asks whether his own happiness will begin now, and answers: no, it never can. Mahler wrote the words himself; the tune became the main theme of his First Symphony’s first movement.
