Gretchen am Spinnrade

Franz Schubert

For tuba and piano

“Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel”: Gretchen sits at her wheel thinking of Faust, “My peace is gone, my heart is heavy.” The piano’s endless sixteenths are the turning wheel; at the memory of his kiss it stops dead, then starts again, haltingly. Schubert set this scene from Goethe’s Faust on 19 October 1814, at seventeen.
