Franz Schubert
“The Linden Tree”: a winter wanderer passes the linden by the town well where he once dreamed, and its rustling seems to call him to stay and rest. The piano’s triplets are the leaves; the middle verse turns to minor as he walks past in the dark. From Schubert’s Winterreise (1827); in Friedrich Silcher’s simpler version it became the German folk song “Am Brunnen vor dem Tore”.
