Franz Schubert
“The Hurdy-Gurdy Man”: an old man stands barefoot on the ice behind the village, cranking his hurdy-gurdy while no one listens. A drone of bare fifths never stops under a small, worn tune. It is the last song of Schubert’s Winterreise, whose second half came out in December 1828, a few weeks after his death.
