Franz Schubert
“The Erl-King”: a father rides through the night with his son in his arms, and only the boy hears the Erl-King luring him away. The piano gallops in hammering triplets from the first bar to the last; the boy cries “My father!” three times, each time higher. Schubert set Goethe’s ballad in 1815, at eighteen; it was printed in 1821 as his Op. 1.
