Der Doppelgänger

Franz Schubert

For tuba and piano

“The Double”: at night, in a silent street, a man looks up at the house where his love once lived and sees someone standing there, wringing his hands; the moonlight shows him his own face. Under it the piano repeats four slow, dark chords almost from start to end. It is the last of the six Heine songs Schubert wrote in 1828 that his publisher gathered into Schwanengesang.
