Franz Schubert
A quiet prayer over a piano that ripples like a harp, the same calm verse three times. Schubert wrote it in 1825 as Ellen’s song from Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake, in German; the Latin “Ave Maria” words it is mostly sung with today were put to it later.
